Web maps challenging GPS handsets.

Maps online are getting smarter than maps on handset GPS systems.

As we’re in the midst of the summer travel season, we have been taking a look at maps recently. And one huge map trend we are seeing is the gap between hand-held global position units, and Web-based mapping services like Google Maps and MapQuest. Portable units win for assist of use and integration with new features like weather information, but they are getting roundly thumped in the most important feature of all: the accuracy of the map.

Maps are prefabricated by basically two companies. Navteq and TeleAtlas. These companies are constantly updating the maps crossways the country, and traditionally they have released their updates once a year. These new data sets usually come out in solid say memory map cards that have to be bought and installed into the hand-held GPS units, which can be a tricky process. The Web-based map services can also offer additional features, like helping you find the cheapest gas.

The huge question here is just how long will it be before map companies release their data to GPS users in roughly real time so that garmin and navigator can remain competitive with Google and MapQuest.

In this year of gadget discontent, where we have the iPhone and nothing else, we are seeing some cool toys on the horizon, providing a bright spot in what could turn into a very drab holiday season.

The very thought of this makes us cringe. If only we could get one of these things installed in our office.
